Turun yliopiston opiskelijoille hankkeeseen osallistuminen on osa opetussuunnitelman mukaista ROKL1330 Tutkimusharjoittelu -kurssia. Projektin aikana tulevat varhaiskasvatuksen maisterit p\u00e4\u00e4sev\u00e4t osalliseksi kansainv\u00e4list\u00e4 koulutusyhteisty\u00f6t\u00e4 osallistumalla 10 p\u00e4iv\u00e4n mittaiselle matkalle Pekingiin, Kiinan p\u00e4\u00e4kaupunkiin. It involves a combination of online<br>collaboration and a two-week onsite intensive course at Beijing Normal University (BNU) in China in 2024, and<br>a similar course in Finland in 2026, hosted by the University of Helsinki (UH), University of Turku (UTU), and<br>University of Oulu (UO). Matkalle valmistautumisen Linda aloitti hyviss\u00e4 ajoin hoitamalla pakolliset asiat, kuten rokotukset ja viisumin hankkimisen. Lis\u00e4ksi h\u00e4n valmistautui matkaan tutustumalla kiinalaiseen kulttuuriin ja maan tapoihin katsomalla mm. dokumentteja ja lukemalla artikkeleita. Maisteriopiskelijat osallistuivat ennen matkaa Playco -et\u00e4kurssille yhdess\u00e4 kiinalaisten opiskelijoiden kanssa. H\u00e4n suoritti kandiopintonsa Turun yliopiston opettajankoulutuslaitoksen Rauman kampuksella kansainv\u00e4lisess\u00e4 opinto-ohjelmassa, joten Playco -hanke tuntui luonnolliselta ja kiinnostavalta jatkumolta syvent\u00e4\u00e4 kansainv\u00e4list\u00e4 osaamista. My\u00f6s Roopen matkaan valmistautuminen on sis\u00e4lt\u00e4nyt paljon k\u00e4yt\u00e4nn\u00f6n valmisteluita ja opintojen ja ty\u00f6n yhteensovittamista. Roope kuvailee yhteisopiskelua kiinalaisten opiskelijoiden kanssa antoisaksi ja sujuvaksi ja h\u00e4n odottikin innolla Beijing Normal Universityn opiskelijoiden tapaamista paikan p\u00e4\u00e4ll\u00e4. Roope kuvailee odotuksiaan matkalta seuraavasti:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>&#8220;Toivon matkalta ammatillista kehityst\u00e4 ja uusia kokemuksia. En ole koskaan aikaisemmin ollut Aasiassa, joten olen innoissani t\u00e4st\u00e4 mahdollisuudesta. Toivon my\u00f6s muodostavani uusia kontakteja ja tuttavuuksia Beijing Normal Universityyn.&#8221;<\/em> -Roope<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kolmas hankkeeseen Turun yliopistosta osallistunut opiskelija oli Anni. H\u00e4n innostui hakeutumaan mukaan hankkeeseen, koska koki teemana olleen leikin ja leikillisyyden itselleen t\u00e4rke\u00e4ksi ja kansainv\u00e4linen yhteisty\u00f6 kiinnosti h\u00e4nt\u00e4. Anni oli my\u00f6s kiinnostunut tutustumaan kiinalaiseen varhaiskasvatukseen ja kulttuuriin. Valmistautuessaan matkalle Anni luki paljon hankkeen materiaaleja ja tutustui kiinalaiseen kulttuuriin ja tapoihin mm. videoiden ja netist\u00e4 l\u00f6ytyneiden vinkkien avulla. Ennen matkaa Anni ja muut opiskelijat tapasivat kiinalaisia opiskelutovereitaan zoomin v\u00e4lityksell\u00e4 pienryhm\u00e4keskusteluissa. Osa keskusteluista oli Annin mukaan melko hiljaisia, niiss\u00e4 keskityttiin keskustelemaan teht\u00e4vist\u00e4, mutta tutustuminen j\u00e4i v\u00e4h\u00e4iseksi. Annin odotukset matkalle olivat:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>&#8220;Odotin ennen matkaa paljon uusia kokemuksia, odotin my\u00f6s hyvin erilaista varhaiskasvatusta ja tapoja toimia kuin mit\u00e4 sitten todellisuudessa oli. Toivoin uusia yst\u00e4vi\u00e4, muistoja, ty\u00f6v\u00e4lineit\u00e4 omaan ty\u00f6arkeen, mahdollisia kontakteja tulevaisuuteen ja uusien asioiden oppimista.&#8221;<\/em> -Anni<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Matkan aikana Anni, Linda ja Roope p\u00e4\u00e4siv\u00e4t havainnoimaan kiinalaista p\u00e4iv\u00e4kotitoimintaa ja tekem\u00e4\u00e4n toimintasuunnitelmia, joita paikalliset varhaiskasvatuksen opettajat toteuttivat lapsiryhm\u00e4lle. Lis\u00e4ksi projektiin kuului seminaaritilaisuus, jossa opiskelijat pitiv\u00e4t esitelmi\u00e4 matkalla oppimistaan asioista ja havainnoistaan paikallisista p\u00e4iv\u00e4kodeista ja niiden toiminnasta. Matka ei toki ollut pelkk\u00e4\u00e4 opiskelua ja ty\u00f6t\u00e4, vaan reissun aikana opiskelijat p\u00e4\u00e4siv\u00e4t tutustumaan paikallisiin n\u00e4ht\u00e4vyyksiin ja vierailemaan mm. Kiinan muurilla ja Disneylandissa. Anni kuvaa kokemusta ikimuistoiseksi ja antoisaksi, h\u00e4nelle j\u00e4i matkalta k\u00e4teen uusia kokemuksia, yst\u00e4vi\u00e4 ja ideoita omaan ty\u00f6h\u00f6n. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>My\u00f6s Linda kuvailee matkaa onnistuneeksi ja antoisaksi. Kokemus oli ainutlaatuinen ja mieleenpainuva, opiskelijat p\u00e4\u00e4siv\u00e4t avartamaan n\u00e4kemyksi\u00e4\u00e4n varhaiskasvatuksen toteuttamisesta ja kokemaan yhteytt\u00e4; varhaiskasvatusty\u00f6t\u00e4 tehd\u00e4\u00e4n suurella syd\u00e4mell\u00e4 niin Suomessa, kuin Kiinassakin, lapsen etua ajatellen. Linda kertoo, ett\u00e4 projekti ja matka saivat h\u00e4net ajattelemaan my\u00f6s omaa opettajuuttaan uudesta n\u00e4k\u00f6kulmasta ja tulevaisuuden unelmat ja haaveet kirkastuivat. Matkan j\u00e4lkeen Lindan opiskelumotivaatio on ollut erityisen korkealla, sill\u00e4 h\u00e4n tunnistaa varhaiskasvatuksen maisterin tutkinnon avaamat mahdollisuudet toimia tulevaisuudessa erilaisissa kansainv\u00e4lisiss\u00e4 projekteissa ja ty\u00f6teht\u00e4viss\u00e4.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>English version:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In autumn 2024, three Master students in Early Childhood Education at the University of Turku were selected to participate in the Playful learning pedagogy in early childhood education and care: co-designed and co-taught blended intensivecourse by Finnish and Chinese universities (PLAYCO) project, funded by the Finnish Ministry of Education. For the students of the University of Turku, participation in the project is part of the ROKL1330 Research practicum course. During the project, future ECE master\u2019s teachers participated in a 10-day long journey to Beijing, the capital of China. In addition, before the journey, students also participated in an online preparation period of about one month with Chinese students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;<em>The project aims to facilitate cross-cultural collaboration between Finnish and Chinese teacher education students and educators in Early Childhood Education and Care (ECEC). In the course ECEC teacher education students will learn and practice playful learning<br>pedagogies in multicultural teams<\/em>.&#8221; -Opetushallitus, TFK programme, funded projects 2024.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I had the opportunity to interview Linda Roos, Roope Heinonen and Anni Marjam\u00e4ki, the early childhood education master&#8217;s students who participated in the PLAYCO project, about their feelings and experiences before and after the journey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Linda Roos says she applied for the project because she felt it was an interesting and unique opportunity. Linda started preparing for the trip well in advance by taking care of the obligatory things, such as vaccinations and obtaining a visa. She also prepared for the trip by learning about Chinese culture and customs by watching documentaries and reading articles. Before the journey, the Master&#8217;s students took part in a Playco e-learning course with Chinese students. Linda describes the international collaboration as exciting but interesting. In addition, talking in English was initially exciting, but Linda was relieved to find that she was by no means alone in her feelings. During the project, the students will have the opportunity to get to know Chinese kindergarten activities and to supervise activities for a group of children. The project also includes reflective discussions with other students and teachers, giving presentations and learning about Chinese culture. Linda describes her expectations from her trip to China as follows:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>&#8220;I&#8217;m looking forward to new and exciting experiences and discoveries and meeting new people. China is a foreign country to me and I am looking forward to all the new things I will experience there. I am particularly looking forward to our visits to a Chinese kindergarten. He completed his bachelor studies in an international studies programme at the Rauma campus, Department of Teacher Education, University of Turku. Therefore, the Playco project seemed like a natural and interesting way to deepen his international knowledge. Roope&#8217;s preparation for the journey has also involved a lot of practical arrangements and balancing studies with work. During the preparation phase, a lot of time was also spent delving into the project&#8217;s digital material and source material. Familiarisation with Chinese culture has been an important part of Roope&#8217;s preparation. Roope describes his co-study with the Chinese students as rewarding and smooth, and he was looking forward to meeting the students from Beijing Normal University on site. Roope describes his expectations from the trip as follows:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>&#8220;I hope the journey will bring professional development and new experiences. I have never been to Asia before, so I am excited about this opportunity. I also hope to make new contacts and acquaintances at Beijing Normal University.&#8221;<\/em>&#8211; Roope Heinonen<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The third student who participated in the project was Anni Marjam\u00e4ki from the University of Turku. She was inspired to join the project because she felt that the theme of play and playfulness was important to her and she was interested in international collaboration. Anni was also interested in learning about Chinese early childhood education and culture. In preparation for the trip, Anni read a lot of the project materials and learned about Chinese culture and customs, including through videos and tips she found online. Before the journey, Anni and the other students met their Chinese classmates via Zoom in small group discussions. Some of the conversations were fairly quiet, focusing on discussing tasks, but there was little getting to know each other. Anni&#8217;s expectations for the journey were:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>&#8220;I was expecting a lot of new experiences before the journey, I was also expecting a very different early childhood education and ways of working than what was actually there. I was hoping for new friends, memories, tools for my own work, possible contacts for the future and learning new things.&#8221;<\/em>&#8211; Anni Marjam\u00e4ki<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During the journey, Anni, Linda and Roope were able to observe Chinese kindergarten activities and make action plans, which were implemented by local early childhood teachers for a group of children. The project also included a seminar session where the students gave presentations on what they had learned\u00a0 about their observations of local kindergartens and their activities. Of course, the trip was not all study and work: during the journey, the students got to see local sights and visit places such as the Great Wall of China and Disneyland. Anni describes the experience as memorable and rewarding, leaving her with new experiences, friends and ideas for her own work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Linda also describes the journey as successful and rewarding. The experience was unique and memorable, the students were able to broaden their views on the implementation of early childhood education and experience the connection; early childhood education work is done with a big heart, both in Finland and in China, for the benefit of the child. Linda says that the project and the journey also made her think about her own teaching from a new perspective and her dreams and aspirations for the future became clearer. For Linda, the PLAYCO project deepened her interest in becoming an exchange student or taking part in various international projects in the future.
