V\u00e4it\u00f6stutkimuksen er\u00e4s tavoite oli osoittaa, ett\u00e4 Spinozan nuoruudessaan aloittama hanke \u201d\u00e4lyn parantamisesta\u201d jatkui kantavana teemana my\u00f6s h\u00e4nen my\u00f6hemm\u00e4ss\u00e4 filosofisessa tuotannossaan.<\/p>\n

Vastav\u00e4itt\u00e4j\u00e4 toivoi avauspuheenvuorossaan, ett\u00e4 itse v\u00e4itteleminen etenisi Spinozan hengess\u00e4. Ett\u00e4 v\u00e4ittelij\u00e4n ja vastav\u00e4itt\u00e4j\u00e4n yhteisen\u00e4 yst\u00e4v\u00e4n\u00e4 olisi totuus, ett\u00e4 tilaisuuden p\u00e4\u00e4m\u00e4\u00e4r\u00e4n\u00e4 olisi vuoropuhelu keskustelukumppanin sel\u00e4tt\u00e4misen sijaan, ett\u00e4 my\u00f6s erimielisyydelle l\u00f6ytyisi lopulta sijaa. Erityisesti erimielisyyden aiheeksi nousi v\u00e4it\u00f6stutkimuksen sivuama k\u00e4sitys synnynn\u00e4isist\u00e4 ideoista: vastav\u00e4itt\u00e4j\u00e4 ei t\u00e4ysin hyv\u00e4ksynyt de Bruynin Spinozalle lukemaa karteesiolaista k\u00e4sityst\u00e4 synnynn\u00e4isist\u00e4 ideoista. Lopulta p\u00e4\u00e4dyttiin toteamaan \u2013 professori Kleinin alkupuheenvuorossaan ehdottamaa ideaalia kunnioitten \u2013 ett\u00e4 vaikka evidenssi t\u00e4lle tulkinnalle saattaa olla v\u00e4h\u00e4ist\u00e4, ei sen vastainen todistusaineisto my\u00f6sk\u00e4\u00e4n ole vakuuttavaa.<\/p>\n

Dissertation: Daryl de Bruyn, \u201dSpinoza\u2019s Concept of Emending the Intellect\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

Daryl de Bruyn (MA) defended his thesis \u201dSpinoza\u2019s Concept of Emending the Intellect\u201d 18.10.2014. Invited to act as the opponent was professor Julie Klein from Villanova University. As the esteemed custodian functioned professor Olli Koistinen from the phil unit.<\/p>\n

One of the claims of the dissertation was that the task Spinoza embarked upon in his youth about \u201cemending the intellect\u201d was a theme that continued to play significant a role through out his later works.<\/p>\n

In her opening address, the opponent wished to proceed with the event in the spirit of Spinoza: that opponent and proponent would be united by a mutual friend, the truth; that the goal of the defense would be dialogue instead of one\u2019s defeating another; that in the end there would be room from disagreement also. Rather long defense achieved these goals in the end rather well; though despite of the cordial maxim proposed in the opening address, the opponent didn\u2019t let the proponent of the hook easily.<\/p>\n

A crucial point of disagreement was found the concept of innate ideas that was only touched upon the dissertation. The opponent couldn\u2019t quite come to accept the rather Cartesian conception of innateness de Bruyn attributed to Spinoza. In the end it was agreed \u2013 in the spirit of the ideal professor Klein proposed to follow \u2013 that while the evidence in favor of the conception proposed by the proponent might be insufficient, the evidence to the contrary is hardly compelling either.<\/p>\n
