JUNecto ry:n puolustus humanistisille tieteille Turun yliopiston tasapainottamisohjelmassa<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n JUNecto ry edustaa Turun yliopiston humanistisen tiedekunnan tohtoriohjelmien, Junon ja Utulingin, v\u00e4it\u00f6skirjatutkijoita. Haluamme ilmaista huolemme yliopiston talouden tasapainotusohjelmasta ja t\u00e4ll\u00e4 viikolla yliopiston hallituksen p\u00e4\u00e4tt\u00e4mist\u00e4 s\u00e4\u00e4st\u00f6ist\u00e4 ja lakkautuskohteista. Lakkautusten p\u00e4\u00e4paino on humanistisissa tieteiss\u00e4.<\/p>\n\n\n\n V\u00e4h\u00e4isiss\u00e4 tiedotustilaisuuksissa sek\u00e4 asiakirjoissa on viitattu tuottavuuteen ja siihen, kuinka lakkautuksen alaisissa yksik\u00f6iss\u00e4 tehty toiminta ei ole \u201cyliopistollista\u201d ja oppiaineissa \u201cei ole merkitt\u00e4v\u00e4\u00e4 t\u00e4ydent\u00e4v\u00e4\u00e4 rahoitusta\u201d. T\u00e4m\u00e4 n\u00e4ytt\u00e4\u00e4 kieliv\u00e4n siit\u00e4, kuinka Turun yliopisto on etenem\u00e4ss\u00e4 pitemm\u00e4lle akateemisen kapitalismin polulla: taloudelliset tavoitteet asetetaan tieteen, opetuksen ja akateemisten tavoitteiden edelle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Mutta jos humanistisia tieteit\u00e4 on tarkasteltava ainoastaan tuotteistamisen ja v\u00e4lineellisyyden n\u00e4k\u00f6kulmasta, on niiden resurssien karsiminen ja oppilasm\u00e4\u00e4rien pienent\u00e4minen harha-askel. Humanistit ty\u00f6llistyv\u00e4t erinomaisesti ja monialaisesti. Humanistinen koulutus on loistava taloudellinen investointi ja etu tulevaisuuden ty\u00f6markkinoilla. Kysytt\u00e4v\u00e4 on: Mist\u00e4 tulevat tulevaisuuden suomen ja muiden kotimaisten sek\u00e4 vieraiden kielten opettajat? Miss\u00e4 koulutetaan viestint\u00e4asiantuntijoita ja sis\u00e4ll\u00f6ntuottajia, jotka tekev\u00e4t mediaan ja kulttuuriin yhteiskunnallisesti ja taiteellisesti merkitt\u00e4v\u00e4\u00e4 sis\u00e4lt\u00f6\u00e4? Miss\u00e4 koulutetaan k\u00e4\u00e4nt\u00e4j\u00e4t, jotka k\u00e4\u00e4nt\u00e4v\u00e4t suomalaisille markkinoille ulkomaalaista tiedett\u00e4, taidetta ja kulttuuria?<\/p>\n\n\n\n Humanististen tieteiden ajattelu tuottavuuden mittaamisen kautta ei kuitenkaan ole mielek\u00e4st\u00e4 \u2013 tai edes mahdollista. Humanistinen tutkimus vahvistaa kulttuurista osaamista ja avaa kansan kulttuuritaustaa. Se toimii tukena muille tieteenaloille, esimerkiksi eettisten kysymysten esitt\u00e4j\u00e4n\u00e4 teknologiakeskusteluissa. Erityisesti humanistiset tieteet valmentavat empaattisia, kriittisesti ajattelevia ja p\u00e4\u00e4ttelykykyisi\u00e4 kansalaisia. Humanistinen tutkimus ja hyv\u00e4 yhteiskunta kuuluvat yhteen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Turun yliopiston on huolehdittava, ett\u00e4 Suomessa on tulevaisuudessakin monimuotoista opetusta, riitt\u00e4v\u00e4sti opettajia sek\u00e4 laaja-alaista tutkimusta. Humanististen tieteiden oppiaineiden opetus ja tutkimus ovat t\u00e4rkeit\u00e4 Turun yliopiston vuosisataisen perinteen jatkajina ja kehitt\u00e4jin\u00e4. Professorien ja muiden opetushenkil\u00f6st\u00f6\u00f6n kuuluvien ohjaus ja tuki ovat k\u00e4ynniss\u00e4 olevien v\u00e4it\u00f6skirjatutkimusten kannalta \u00e4\u00e4rimm\u00e4isen t\u00e4rke\u00e4\u00e4. V\u00e4it\u00f6skirjatutkijat tarvitsevat samanlaista tukea my\u00f6s jatkossa korkeatasoisen tutkimuksen takaamiseksi. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Professuurien lakkauttaminen ja oppiaineiden resurssien v\u00e4hent\u00e4minen vaikuttavat siihen, millaista tutkimusta Turun yliopistossa tulevaisuudessa tehd\u00e4\u00e4n \u2013 tai ei tulla tekem\u00e4\u00e4n. Tutkimuksen yksipuolistuminen heikent\u00e4\u00e4 Turun yliopiston houkuttelevuutta tutkimusymp\u00e4rist\u00f6n\u00e4 ja menee vastoin yliopiston tutkimuksen temaattisia kokonaisuuksia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n JUNecto ry toivoo, ett\u00e4 talouden tasapainottamisohjelmassa huomioidaan humanististen tieteiden tutkimuksen t\u00e4rkeys ei vain Turun yliopiston omien periaatteiden mukaisesti vaan my\u00f6s suomalaisen yhteiskunnan kannalta.<\/p>\n\n\n\n —<\/p>\n\n\n\n JUNecto ry’s defence of the humanities in the University<\/strong> of Turku’s Financial Balancing Programme<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n JUNecto ry represents the doctoral researchers of the Juno and Utuling doctoral programmes of the Faculty of Humanities at the University of Turku. We would like to express our concerns about the University’s Financial Balancing Programme and the University Board\u2019s decision on the savings which was presented this week. The main focus of the savings is in the Humanities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n In the few public briefings and documents, productivity has been mentioned plenty. It has been said how the units being discontinued are not doing \u201cuniversity\u201d activities and that there is “no significant additional funding” in the disciplines. This seems to indicate that the University of Turku is moving further down the path of academic capitalism: putting economic objectives before scientific, educational, and academic ones.<\/p>\n\n\n\n But if we must consider humanities only from the lens of productivity, cutting back on resources and reducing the student intake is a misguided move. Humanists are highly employable and multidisciplinary. Humanities education is a great economic investment and an asset for the future labor market. The question is: Where will the teachers of Finnish and other national and foreign languages of the future come from? Where will we train communication specialists and content producers who will create socially and artistically relevant content for media and culture? Where are the translators who translate foreign science, art, and culture for the Finnish market trained?<\/p>\n\n\n\n However, thinking of the humanities in terms of productivity or economic growth is not meaningful \u2013 or even possible. Humanities research strengthens the cultural competence of people and explores the nation\u2019s cultural background. It supports other disciplines, for example by raising ethical questions in debates on technology. In particular, the humanities prepare empathetic, critical, and informed citizens. Humanities research and good society go hand in hand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The University of Turku must ensure that Finland will continue to have a diverse education, enough teachers, and wide-ranging research in the future. Teaching and research in the humanities are important as the continuation and development of the University of Turku’s centuries-old tradition. The guidance and support of professors and other teaching staff is of paramount importance for ongoing doctoral research. Doctoral researchers need similar support in the future to ensure high quality research.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The discontinuation of professorships and the reduction of resources in the disciplines will also affect the kind of research that will be carried out at the University of Turku in the future \u2013 or what will not be studied.
