Risto Paukku <\/strong>works as part-time OIL SPILL Project Assistant at the Southwest District of the Finnish Red Cross. Interestingly, his work background lies at another Project Partner: Neste<\/a>. He is also an active trainer and volunteer at the Voluntary Rescue Service<\/a> (Vapepa). <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201dI started volunteering in the 70s \u2013 first as a patrolman. A first-aid course, organized by the Finnish Red Cross, was part of the job orientation. I guess I got hooked on learning. I finished more first-aid courses, advanced to group leader training and attended various courses provided by the Finnish Voluntary Rescue Service.\u201d (Photo: Finnish Red Cross) <\/em><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Risto\u2019s careers at both Neste and Vapepa are an advantage for the OIL SPILL project. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201dIn OIL SPILL, we work with volunteers, and the network I built during the years is a definite benefit for this job. At Neste, I worked in various posts. I know the company \u2013 and am well aware of the mismatch of water and oil!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201dIt is always interesting to plan and arrange the trainings. Many elements have to be taken into account, and they should be considered from all angles to make the event meet the participants\u2019 expectations and be useful as well.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Risto appreciates the feedback the organizers receive from participants because it always provides signposts for improvement. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201dAfter all, we aim to improve our abilities and preparedness as volunteers to assist the authorities in the worst-case scenarios.” <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In these situations, the careful planning and frequently practiced course of action pay off.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
