The event was held in Finnish.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the panel discussion, <strong>Juha Virto<\/strong> (Chief of Rescue Services, <strong><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.vspelastus.fi\/en\" target=\"_blank\">Southwest Finland Emergency Services<\/a><\/strong>), <strong>Tommi Virtanen<\/strong> (Head of Preparedness,<strong> <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.redcross.fi\/\" target=\"_blank\">Finnish Red Cross<\/a><\/strong>), and experienced volunteer <strong>Petri Jaarto<\/strong> (<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/wwf.fi\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>WWF Finland<\/strong><\/a>) shared their views on the cooperation between volunteers and authorities in oil spill response (OSR). OIL SPILL Communication Manager <strong>Minna-Liina Ojala<\/strong> hosted the panel. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-src=\"https:\/\/blogit.utu.fi\/oilspill\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/272\/2021\/08\/Itameripaiva_kuvab-1024x416.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-6600 lazyload\" width=\"620\" height=\"262\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 620px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 620\/262;\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The panelists were unanimous regarding the importance of joint recurring OSR exercises between volunteers and authorities. Although large oil spills are rather rare, preparedness is a continuous process.&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/blogit.utu.fi\/oilspill\/?s=vellamo\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Vellamo 2021 exercise<\/strong><\/a>, for instance, gathered the different OSR actors to test and practice current procedures. It was a success. However, success in a 2-day tabletop exercise is not enough; the mechanisms have to sustain a real operation that could last several weeks or even months. The panelists agreed that there is still work to do be done in developing the national and cross-border collaboration models in OSR.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/blogit.utu.fi\/oilspill\/2020\/02\/27\/the-chief-of-rescue-services-believes-in-cooperation-and-focused-coordination-in-oil-spill-response-swfes-2-3\/\" target=\"_blank\">Juha Virto&#8217;s interview for the OIL SPILL Project<\/a> <\/li><li><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/blogit.utu.fi\/oilspill\/2020\/03\/06\/tommi-virtanen-on-voluntary-oil-spill-response-volunteerism-is-a-treasure-and-so-is-a-clean-environment-introducing-the-finnish-red-cross-4-4\/\" target=\"_blank\">Tommi Virtanen on voluntary oil spill response<\/a> <\/li><li><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/blogit.utu.fi\/oilspill\/2020\/09\/16\/wwf-finland-trains-voluntary-forces-to-fight-oil-spills-best-practices-are-shared-in-the-oil-spill-project\/\" target=\"_blank\">About WWF Finland&#8217;s OSR activities<\/a>, <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/wwf.fi\/vapaaehtoistyo\/oljyntorjuntajoukot\/\" target=\"_blank\">WWF \u00f6ljyntorjuntajoukot<\/a>  <\/li><li><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/vapepa.fi\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\">Finnish Voluntary Rescue Service&#8217;s website<\/a><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>In his presentation, <strong>Atte Lindqvist <\/strong>from <strong><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pidasaaristosiistina.fi\/en\" target=\"_blank\">Keep the Archipelago Tidy Association<\/a><\/strong> shed light on the marine litter situation on the Finnish coast. Most of this waste is plastic, and, as the image below shows, recreational use (tourism &amp; individual users, blue color) is the main source of beach litter. <strong>Atte<\/strong> noted that marine litter is a problem that can be solved. Education leads to the change of attitude and behaviour. The Association is engaged in diverse and concrete activities \u2013 from environmental maintenance tasks and educational work to national and international project work \u2013 to keep Finland\u2019s coastlines and archipelago clean. This newly established clustering project is co-funded by the Interreg Northern Periphery and Arctic programme. POPCORN brings together four projects with a focus on maritime oil or plastics contamination: <strong><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/www.circularocean.eu\/\" target=\"_blank\">Circular Ocean<\/a>, <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/bluecirculareconomy.eu\/\" target=\"_blank\">Blue Circular Economy<\/a><\/strong>, <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/app4sea.interreg-npa.eu\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>APP4SEA<\/strong><\/a>, and <strong>OIL SPILL<\/strong>.
