Hi everyone, welcome to my first blog post! My name is Jonathon and I’m a first year student on the Master’s Degree Programme in Futures Studies. I’m really excited to join the ambassador programme and tell you a little bit about my experiences at UTU!
Time has gone very quickly since I started the course back in September 2018. At the ripe old age of 29, I was a little concerned about returning to education, and also about being significantly older than my classmates. Fortunately, my worries were unfounded – it turns out that I remember how to write essays, and plenty of my group are also a little older than the average student (we prefer to refer to ourselves as ‘experienced’!).
By the way, don’t worry if you’re not quite sure what Futures Studies is – I’ve been here for five months and I’m still figuring it out! I’ll write a future post with my latest investigations, but as a small sample I have recently been researching the ethics of self-driving vehicles, as well as how to best evaluate long-term foresight projects.
I’m originally from the UK, but I’ve lived in Finland for almost 18 months now – I can handle the cold weather, I have met Father Christmas and my Finnish language skills are somewhere between ‘asking for directions’ and ‘lamenting the latest poor performance of the local ice hockey team’.
I hope this blog informs and entertains in equal measure! I remember that when I was applying to UTU I had lots of questions, so don’t hesitate to comment below if there is anything I can help you with!
Until next time!
