AMEMPLOY
Algorithmic Management in Employment

Algorithmic management refers to employers using digital and AI tools to manage and evaluate employees. It can include, for instance, wearable technology, employee tracking, or monitoring the movements of an employee’s mouse and keyboard in knowledge work.

AMEMPLOY is a research project funded by the Research Council of Finland. The project is run by Annika Rosin, Assistant Professor of Labour and Social Law at the University of Turku. The project is focused on the use of algorithms in working life. The project will run until autumn 2028.

The aim of the project is to examine the labour law and data protection restrictions on the use of algorithmic management, to identify possible gaps in legislation, and to make proposals for future legislation.

We assess algorithmic management from three perspectives

Privacy and data protection

How using algorithmic management influences the privacy and data protection rights of workers?

Employment status

How using algorithmic management influences the employment status of the worker?

Labour rights and conditions

How using algorithmic management influences the labour rights and working conditions of an employee?
