Welcome to UTUBE!
We are a group of researchers from the doctoral programme in Biology, Geography and Geology of the University of Turku and we have been dedicating ourselves to science with enthusiasm. Because we think that scientific findings should be accessible to all, and because we wish that everybody could have a glimpse of the scientific world (what are scientists doing? How does science work? What is its role in the society?), we decided to take a step forward and actively commit ourselves to science communication.
In addition to our everyday life communication, social media is a good platform to start. All kinds of initiatives have flourished on the internet and social networks (IFLS, AsapSCIENCE, Vsauce; just to cite a few…), and science has never been as reachable as it is now. This is exciting and we want to be part of this new world!
So, as PhD students we believe that one of our duties is to inform the public about what scientists are doing inside the university bubble. Of course, it is a challenge for us to talk about our findings (without being too boring) in a language that lacks jargon and technical terms. But… why not giving it a try?
So here we are: this blog is our humble attempt to share the science made at the University of Turku with everybody. We will regularly post articles on general topics related to science and scientific breakthroughs. We will also focus on specific scientific questions (not necessarily related to our theses), interview scientists, post pictures/descriptions of fieldwork, discuss hot topics and try to build a sense of community with other people.
You are more than welcome to take part in this new initiative by sharing your constructive comments and suggesting posts. With this blog, we also wish to encourage more scientists in getting involved in science communication. We are more than one hundred PhD students in our doctoral programme and this blog is about the research of all of us.

Tervetuloa UTUBEen!
UTUBEn taustalla häärii Turun Yliopiston tohtoriohjelman väitöskirjatutkijoita biologian, maantieteen ja geologian aloilta. Suhtaudumme tieteeseen suurella innolla ja kiinnostuksella. Mielestämme tutkimuksen ja uusimpien löytöjen tulisi olla helpommin ja laajemmin saavutettavissa. Ei ainoastaan suurten kansainvälisten tutkimusryhmien tulokset vaan myös pienempien tutkimusten tulokset sekä millaista on tutkijoiden työ. Haluamme ottaa ensiaskeleen ja viestiä aktiivisesti tieteestä.
Sosiaalinen media on hyvä alku. Internetissä kukoistaa jo monenlaisia tieteeseen, tutkimukseen ja tiedottamiseen liittyviä blogeja (IFLS, AsapSCIENCE, Vsauce…). Tämä on jännittävää ja haluamme olla mukana. Väitöskirjatutkijoina ja uuden tutkijasukupolven edustajina meidän tehtävämme on tuoda tiede yliopiston huoneista sinne, missä koko maailma jo on – nettiin. Haasteemme on kertoa omasta tutkimuksestamme ymmärrettävästi. On yllättävän vaikeaa luopua ammattikielestä ja tieteellisen tekstin säännöistä, mutta miksi emme yrittäisi?
Postaamme säännöllisesti juttuja tieteeseen ja sen läpimurtoihin liittyvistä aiheista. Kerromme näytteiden ottamisesta ja kenttätyöstä, haastattelemme tutkijoita ja keskustelemme uutisiin nousseista aloihimme liittyvistä ilmiöistä.
Olet lämpimästi tervetullut osallistumaan blogiimme: esitä kysymyksiä, ehdota aiheita ja anna rakentavia kommentteja. Haluamme tällä blogilla rohkaista tutkijoita kertomaan tutkimuksestaan ja jakamaan omaa osaamistaan. Tutkijakoulussamme on yli sata opiskelijaa. Tämä blogi kertoo kaikkien meidän tutkimuksesta.
