Next week in Turku will be held the 2nd edition of the AURA symposium (formerly known as SEBDEM) which is organized every two years by Ph.D. students from the University of Turku and Åbo Akademi University. This symposium provides an overview on the research currently being conducted at the University of Turku and Åbo Akademi by PhD and MSc students in various fields of biology. In addition, this event is a great opportunity for students to present and discuss their research and practice talking to a broad audience.

The AURA symposium hence offers students a unique opportunity to come together, learn about each other’s research projects, and exchange ideas and hopefully will encourage further collaboration between the two universities. We hope this year’s symposium will have the same success as the AURA symposium 2014 where all the participants and attendees were very active in giving feedbacks. During the BGG doctoral training days of the same year, it was often mentioned as a positive and enriching experience by students who participated.

The AURA symposium 2016 will be held on Wednesday and Thursday 6-7th April in Armfelt auditorium (Arken, ÅA). This year, the four invited keynote speakers are:

Bodil Elmhagen (Stockholm University)

Top-down and bottom-up cascades in time and space

Teppo Hiltunen (University of Helsinki)

Eco-evolutionary dynamics in microbial communities

Kerstin Johannesson (University of Gothenburg)

Evolution of local adaptation and reproductive barriers in primary hybrid zones

Shaun Killen (University of Glasgow)

Fuel and friends: Links between metabolism and social behaviours in fish

The program of the symposium can be found on the page of the AURA Symposium (verkkosivu myös suomeksi – webbsidan också på svenska). Participation is cost-free and the event is open to everybody. We look forward to seeing many of you there!

In a few weeks, we will write a post relating the symposium’s highlights, behind-the-scenes and recaps. See you soon!
