Active Waste Decontamination with Elomatic – Monday Feb. 13th. from 12 to 16hrs.

1. COMPANY

Elomatic  ( https://www.elomatic.com/en/)

2.  SEMINAR’s focus

To design the next generation of user requirements for Active Waste Decontamination (AWD) system.

The AWD system consists of Active Waste collection piping going to two tanks. One tank is collecting while the other tank is processing the liquid. The processing can consist of chemical additions or heating of the waste liquid. After processing the deactivated waste liquid is pumped to the municipal wastewater system (see picture).

3. DESCRIPTION

Elomatic has decades of experience in designing, constructing, and qualifying new facilities and production lines for pharmaceutical, medical device and related companies. Our designs have gained cGMP approval from authorities in Europe, US and India to name a few.

Our services encompass all investment phases from creating a concept to delivering the final report on operational qualification – whether your needs concern the contained production of potent API or the biological manufacturing of vaccines.

We use agreed standards and guidelines (such as GMP, ISO, ACME and ISPE) as the basis, and tailor the design according to your requirements. Our goal is to create the smoothest possible process for obtaining the needed approvals for your investment.

4. CHALLENGE

Engineers produce technologies for others to use. To increase the impact of these technologies across different contexts, engineers need to be able to communicate clearly with different stakeholders in order to conceptualize, design and deploy any technology. Often, for this communication process engineers utilize user requirements tools. However often these tools might be unclear and or omit valuable information. These can affect engineers, developers and end users.

Elomatic has created (and sold) a couple of Active Waste Decontamination (AWD) systems for decontamination of active wastes from pharmaceutical facilities. Novel technology that is able to clean the water from residues of pharmaceuticals production waste, which utilizes modern approaches to medicaments, is fundamental.  The process of cleaning the water must take place before liquid join other water treatment facilities.

Elomatic is planning to create an AWD-package including delivery, testing and qualification as well as the documentation. The engineering equipment should have a clear interface for its customer, which might include: operators, engineering and decision makers.

In this seminar session, we will learn about the Active Waste Decontamination (AWD) technology of Elomatic. We want to challenge the future engineers to create a package which benefits the communication and understanding between the future engineers who will be leading the development of forthcoming AWD and end-user engineers.  How would you provide a more holistic approach to communicate the current requirements in the market for AWD? These requirements include user friendliness, spare parts, maintenance, etc.

You are invited to constructively analyze the current tools that Elomatic utilize for the AWD and offer ideas on how to improve them. Perhaps you even detected what are the key and unique aspects of these engineering products.

5. DAY and TIME

The enrollment closes on Wednesday February 8th at 20hrs.

8. PRE-ASSIGNMENT DUE

To prepare ourselves for Elomatic session, we need to gain knowledge in three particular areas:

Task 1. Explore the domain.

We start by exploring how the pharmaceutical industry treats their waste waters.
Who are the players in the field?

For this task, do a brief benchmarking and detect 3 companies that do waste water
treatment for pharmaceuticals. Explore and extract what these organizations offer to
their customers and how they communicate their product and services.

Task 2: User requirement tools

As we know user requirements tools are fundamental for any project development.
There are many tools and approaches. In this task, we want you to familiarece with
some research done in the area and analyze certain tools. Consequently taks 2
consists of two activities:

Activity 2.1. Learn from the research done in user requirements.

Detect one academic article, from your domain, that offers you a new
perspective on user requirements. If you do not find any publication
interesting from your perspective, you can read one of the following
suggestions:

(1) Yahui Wang, Suihuai Yu, Ting Xu.  A user requirement driven framework for collaborative design knowledge management.  Advanced Engineering Informatics, Volume 33, 2017, Pages 16-28, ISSN 1474-0346, https://doi.org/10.1016/j.aei.2017.04.002.

(2) Simpson, T.W., Bobuk, A., Slingerland, L.A. et al. From user requirements to commonality specifications: an integrated approach to product family design. Res Eng Design 23, 141–153 (2012). https://doi-org.ezproxy.utu.fi/10.1007/s00163-011-0119-4

After reading the academic manuscript that you found interesting, extract
your main findings in the topic
.

Activity 2.2.  Learn what is in the market

There are many user requirements tools available in the market. Select one of
these tools and explore it briefly. Finally, report the aspects that you find
interesting and apparently easy to use of the tool you selected. Also mention
if there is any aspect that might be related with the academic knowledge you
gain in the previous activity related to user requirements.

Task 3: Analyzing Elomatic user requirement tool for the AWD-package

Analyze the User Requirement Specification (URS) for the AWD (Active Waste  Decontamination) system defined by Elomatic. You will receive via email the URS defining the current design of the system, or you can download it from this link. As an overview of the system (see figure 1 and 2) the active waste liquid is collected from
several user points in the production. The liquid waste is directed to one of two
collecting tanks. When one tank is full, it will close and the decontamination process (in this case by heating with factory steam in the jacket of the tank) will start.
The other tank will start collecting the liquid waste while the other is processing. After a successful decontamination cycle, the liquid will be led to the municipal wastewater treatment plant.

Put yourself into a role of an operator, designer or purchaser of the AWD system and
analyze the URS based on your chosen role. Think about what could be improved in
terms of usability, operating safety, or effectiveness of the decontamination. Based
on the URS, how would you design the system?

In our session with Elomatic we will discuss and reflect further about these topics. Looking forward to have your insights in the conversation.

Submission report.

The report should reflect your work done in the preparation for this session. It should
include the three tasks of the pre-assignment:

Taks 1.
Write a summary of your findings related to the domain we will be working in this session.

Indicate:

What organizations you detect, include their websites.

What product and services did you analyze, what were their main
characteristics.

Task 2.

Activity 2.1. Report what article you read, including its bibliography, and write a
summary of what you have learned from reading the article.

Activity 2.2. Report what user requirement tool from the market you select,
including its website. Indicate how you analyze it, and specify the relevant aspects
that you detect of the tool that are useful and easy to learn. Also indicate if you find
any characteristic of the tool liked to the academic knowledge you learned earlier.

Taks 3
Specify what was the role you took when reviewing the material. The options you
have were: an operator, engineer or decision maker.

Enlist the aspects you will improve of the tool you analyzed. Include, next to each
aspect, a brief description of the task.

Submit your report, preferably a PDF file by Thursday February 9th. at 4pm
via email to Carolina Islas caisse [@] utu.fi

with the subject line: ELOMATIC_ pre-assignment.

Your file name should be labeled: ELOMATIC_pre-assignment_YOUR-NAM
