Latvian Maritime Academy (LMA) is the only institution in Latvia to provide higher maritime vocational education for the maritime industry. The fundamental role of the Academy is to ensure the balance of academic education, professional training, and practical skills to respond to a wide spectrum of needs in the maritime industry.

LMA graduates well-qualified mariners in the technical areas of navigation, marine engineering, marine electrical automation, and port management. LMA also educates officers for the Latvian Navy. The snapshot of statistics states more than 1000 students to be educated at LMA currently, including the Master’s degree curriculum.

The Academy also makes a great effort to attract and engage experts from all segments of the maritime industry. There are several ongoing European projects, where LMA has involved various experienced representatives from different sectors of the Latvian marine industry. This approach is a key to success. Environmental projects, such as OIL SPILL and others, are always on the top of LMA activities. For instance, one LMA’s most recent ongoing project advances the use of bio-degradable material for the need of the marine industry.
