A Colombian in Finnish Wonderland –The story of how Laura became a tutor for international students–

Laura Moreno from Colombia first wanted to pursue a PhD, but later decided to apply for several Master’s Degree programmes instead. She came to Finland in 2018 after she got accepted into the then entirely new programme called Master’s Degree Programme Human Neuroscience, which is an intersection between psychology, medicine, biology and even pharmacology. In her second year of studies Laura decided to become a tutor and help the next generation of students acclimate to the new environment. Tutoring in a nutshell and why should you get involved!

As tutors, it is our job to help new incoming students (both exchange and degree) with practical matters when settling in. That includes assisting new students to adapt to the Finnish culture, giving insights about how Finnish educational system works, sharing our experiences about student life, familiarising them with UTU campus and, most importantly, serving as a contact person whenever help may be needed (especially during the first months). And the list goes on and on, depending on how active you are and how much help your tutees may need.
