1. COMPANY
DELTAMARINE (https://deltamarin.com/ )
2. SEMINAR’s focus
To create and design new services and/or processes while utilizing Deltamarin’s data and public data.
3. DESCRIPTION
Deltamarin Group provides ship design, offshore engineering and construction support for the marine and offshore industries worldwide. The services include the full range of consulting, design and engineering as well as procurement, support for construction and installation. The Group employs around 400 experts in its own and associated companies located in Europe and Asia. Deltamarin is part of China Merchants Group, a Fortune 500 company.
4. CHALLENGE
In computer science and engineering education we have lectures that teach us to learn to process data. Often those courses help us to develop algorithms and create systems to extract information with certain goal in mind. However, to think creatively about how to use data is seldom promoted, and it is a skill that will benefit to the beholder. Can we generate ideas on how to use data? Have you had wondered about using current data, meaningfully to create new services or solve problems? Is it possible that data guide us and inspire us to visualize possibilities that otherwise wouldn’t be possible?
In this seminar session we have the opportunity to be visionaries with existing data. What opportunities would you find? Deltamarine would like us to explore with two types of data:
- Deltamarine’s data, which has been collecting over the years, across designs and construction process of diverse ships.
- Public data available for ships and shipping.
Furthermore DELTAMARINE will present us some inspiring examples of innovation from thinking creatively about data in other fields. With all these information, the challenge of this session is to wonder and explore: What new services emerge from the synthesis of ship design data and public data?
This session invites you to wonder and be visionary with the use of data. An important skill to develop in our era, besides to know how to process data. Let’s exercise the creative muscle in this session. What applications, processes or services emerge from utilizing different sets of data in the realm of Deltamarin? . Are you ready for this challenge?
5. DAY and TIME
February 11th from 12:00 hrs to 16:00 hrs.
6. SEMINAR LOCATION
University of Turku. Room TBA.
7. ENROLLMENT
Please fill the following form for your enrollment: https://link.webropol.com/ep/DELTAMARIN22
The deadline for the enrollment is Wed. Feb. 9th.
8. PRE-ASSIGNMENT
The pre-assignment should be submitted by 10.2.2022 and it consists of three tasks to help you to prepare for the session.
Task A. – Inspire your creativity (research)
Sometimes we get inspired by ideas from others. For this task let’s explore how different industries are utilizing data creatively. Who is using data in untraditional ways? Detect a company that is utilizing data creatively in their industry to deliver a service, product or even do marketing. For this task, you report should include:
- What company did you select that is using data in an untraditional way?
- Describe the data innovation that they implement from your perspective.
- What type of data the company is using and with which purpose?,
- How does this innovation (creative ways to use data) benefit the company / industry?
- What was learned in the case study you found?
Task B. – Immerse in the maritime world (research and role playing)
Imagine you are a ship owner (you decide what type of ship you own, and if your ship is for work or for leisure). Once you define the ship you own, immerse yourself in the world of the particular ship you select, e.g. what model of ship you are interested in? What do you like about the particular ship you select? How do you think you will use it? Do you like the engineering of the ship? What are its benefits and its drawbacks?
Once you select a vessel, your purpose with it and the aspect that interests you about the vessel, the next step is to explore what conversations surround the type of ship you selected. Look for websites, chats, blogs, posts, news, including a youtube channel. The goal is to detect from those conversations: what are the main concerns of the community talking about the vessel you select? What are the main wishes of this community? Do you detect any topic that you think is needed to be discussed in the community?
In the report explain
- Vessel type and why you selected.
- The aspect of the vessel that calls more your attention and you research about.
- What sources of information / conversation related to the particular aspects of the vesel did you explore?
- What are your main findings of the sources of information you explore and potential communities that you find? What are the main conversations?
- What open questions (either a problem or a vision) did you find in those sources of information or communities that could be addressed with the use of data?
Task C. Expanding your findings (research and visualization)
For this task, we assumed you already solved task A and task B. Therefore, you have a viewpoint about how other industries utilize data creatively (task A). Additionally you gain an insight of the maritime domain (taks B). Now it is time to move out of our comfort zone and do some creative exercise to prepare ourselves for our session with DELTAMARINE.
Explore some of the public data available in the maritime world, for example you can use the resources of the Copernicus marine service (https://resources.marine.copernicus.eu/products) or the official portal for the European data (https://data.europa.eu/en).
First select a particular data set. Second, it is time to exercise our imagination and now we will create a service based on the open data that you selected. Envisage how that data could be used to improve or benefit the experience in the vessel or other stakeholders linked to the vessel? In this task there are no limits for your creativity, the only boundary is that you utilize an open data source to conceive something new.
Support yourself with the information given about brainstorming in the course blog (https://blogit.utu.fi/industryseminars/brainstorming/). Is there any technique of brainstorming that suits you better to create new ideas?
In the report explain:
- What open data set do you select? Please include the link to the dataset
- Why do you select that particular data set?
- Describe the service that you visualize. How does the service work? To whom benefits this service?
- What brainstorming technique is more suitable for you and why? What brainstorming technique did you use for this exercise?
Report:
Write your findings of each section (A,B and C) and submit your report to Carolina Islas caisse [@] utu.fi with the subject line: DELTAMARINE pre-assignment.
Your file should save as follows: DELTAMARINE_pre-assignment_YOUR-NAME
