Filosofiaan ennätysmäärä uusia opiskelijoita

Filosofiaan on tänä syksynä otettu ennätysmäärä uusia opiskelijoita. Filosofian opiskelemisen Turussa pääaineenaan aloitti nyt yhteensä 19 henkilöä.

Opetus- ja kulttuuriministeriön päätöksen johdosta filosofia sai myös kolme lisäaloituspaikkaa. Aloituspaikkojen lisääminen liittyy valtion pyrkimykseen pidentää nuorten työuria nopeuttamalla korkeakouluopiskelun aloittamista.

Lisäpaikkoja on myönnetty aloille, ”joilla on hyvät työllistymisnäkymät ja suoranaista työvoimapulaa” (ks. yliopiston uutinen aiheesta).

Filosofian henkilökunta toivottaa uudet opiskelijat lämpimästi tervetulleeksi!

Turku phil-unit makes a personal best in student intake

Phil-unit has accepted a record-breaking number of new students. There are 19 new students starting their studies this fall in Turku.

On the basis of Ministry of Education and Culture decision, philosophy was allotted thee extra positions in the intake. The decision is related to the aim of the Finnish government to make careers, especially of the young, longer.

The extra places were apportioned to units on the basis of the general employment situation.

A TUCEMEMS Conference on Early Modern Philosophy: Understanding the World and Human Beings

TUCEMEMS (Turku Center for Medieval and Early Modern Studies) järjesti professori Olli Koistisen johdolla korkean tason kansainvälisen seminaarin Turussa touko-kesäkuun vaihteessa. Kaksi päiväinen seminaari A TUCEMEMS Conference on Early Modern Philosophy: Understanding the World and Human Beings piti sisällään suuren kattauksen esitelmiä Augustinuksesta ja Immanuel Kantiin.

Lauantaina esitelmöivät Sebastian Gardner (University College, Lontoo), Peter Myrdal (Uppsala), Kai Hauser (Technische Universität Berlin), Hemmo Laiho (Turku), Tomas Ekenberg (Uppsala) ja Justin Steinberg (Brooklyn College).

Sunnuntaina lauteille nousivat puolestaan Valtteri Viljanen (Turku), John Carriero (UCLA/dosentti@UTU), Arto Repo (Turku), Lilli Alanen (Uppsala), Olli Koistinen (Turku) sekä Joseph Almog ja Jani Sinokki (Turku).

TUCEMEMS (Turku Center for Medieval and Early Modern Studies) organized a high level international conference at the phil unit last week end, professor Olli Koistinen being the leading organizer. Two day seminar titled A TUCEMEMS Conference on Early Modern Philosophy: Understanding the World and Human Beings included a large variety of presentations on topics rangin from Augustine to Immanuel Kant.

Saturday’s speakers were Sebastian Gardner (University College, London), Peter Myrdal (Uppsala), Kai Hauser (Technische Universität Berlin), Hemmo Laiho (Turku), Tomas Ekenberg (Uppsala) and Justin Steinberg (Brooklyn College).

On sunday presentations were delivered by Valtteri Viljanen (Turku), John Carriero (UCLA/docent@UTU), Arto Repo (Turku), Lilli Alanen (Uppsala), Olli Koistinen (Turku) and Joseph Almog with Jani Sinokki (Turku).

Professori John Carriero vierailee oppiaineessa

Professori John Carriero (UCLA, Turun yliopiston dosentti) vierailee filosofian oppiaineessa toukokuussa. Hän pitää vierailunsa aikana 26. – 30.5 kurssin otsikolla  ”Themes from Spinoza’s Ethics”.

Opetus järjestetään seminaarihuoneessa 150 seuraavalla aikataululla: ma 26.5. 12-14, ti 27.5. 10-12 ja 16-18, ke 28.5. 14-16, ja pe 30.5. 14-16.

Professor John Carriero (UCLA, title of docent at UTU) is visiting Turku phil unit at the end of May. During his visit professor Carriero will be teaching a one-week course ”Themes from Spinoza’s Ethics”.

Lectures will be given at the Seminar Room 150, with the following schedule: Mo 26.5. 12-14, Tue 27.5. 10-12 and 16-18, Wed 28.5. 14-16, and Fri 30.5. 14-16.

Brocher Fellowship in February and March in 2014

Doctoral Candidate Susanne Uusitalo spent part of her spring at the Brocher Foundation in Hermance, Switzerland. The foundation supports bioethical research by selecting researchers from different disciplines to come and do their own research at the foundation situated by Lake Geneva. The foundation also hosts workshops and symposia on the ethical, legal and social implications of the development of medical research and biotechnologies.

Uusitalo applied for the foundation to work on her Ph.D. thesis that deals with questions of addiction. The breathtakingly beautiful surroundings and the inspiring bioethical atmosphere of the fellow researchers fuelled her writing process. As the foundation is close to Geneva, the researchers have a chance to arrange visits and collaborate with institutions and organizations in the area. During her stay, Uusitalo visited the headquarters of the World Health Organization as well as the primary care unit (for drug addicts) at the Hôpitaux Universitaires de Genève.

Professori Koistinen Suomalaisen tiedeakatemian jäseneksi

Teoreettisen filosofian professori Olli Koistinen on valittu Suomalaisen tiedeakatemian uudeksi jäseneksi. Tiedeakatemia jakaantuu kahteen osastoon, matemaattis-luonnontieteelliseen sekä humanistiseen, joista jälkimmäisen jäseneksi Koistinen on nyt valittu. Tiedeakatemian varsinaisiksi jäseniksi kutsutaan ansioituneita suomalaisia tieteenharjoittajia.

Tutkijavierailu Walesissa

Filosofian tohtorikoulutettava Mika Hämäläinen vierailee Swansea Universityssa vuoden 2014 huhti- ja toukokuun. Swansea on noin 200 000 asukkaan kaupunki Lounais-Walesissa. Yliopisto on perustettu vuonna 1920, ja siellä opiskelee vajaat 16 000 opiskelijaa.

Vierailun aikana Hämäläinen työstää väitöskirjaansa urheilunfilosofiasta. Vierailua isännöi soveltavan etiikan professori Mike McNamee, joka toimii muun muassa Sport, Ethics and Philosophy -lehden päätoimittajana. Matkaa ovat tukeneet taloudellisesti TOP-Säätiö ja Turun Yliopistosäätiö.

Professori Veikko Launis 50 vuotta

Lääketieteellisen etiikan professori Veikko Launis täytti pyöreät 50 vuotta 23.3.2014. Juhlaseminaari merkkipäivän kunniaksi järjestettiin Publicumilla 21.3.

Seminaarin avasi sen puheenjohtajana toiminut professori Juha Räikkä. Ensin esitettiin asiaan kuuluvia tervehdyksiä ja onnitteluja päivänsankarille.

Filosofian oppiaineen tervehdyksen toimitti professori Eerik Lagerspetz (ks. kuva alla). Lääketieteellisen tiedekunnan dekaani Tapani Rönnemaa esitti tiedekunnan onnittelut, ja kultturihistorian oppiaineen sekä Tiuku-hankkeen tervehdyksen hankkeen puheenjohtajalle toi Annakaisa Suominen. Varsinais-Suomen sairaanhoitopiirin eettinen toimikunta tervehti merkkipäiväänsä viettävää jäsentään puheenjohtajansa Mika Scheininin ja asiantuntijalääkäri Tiina Variksen voimin.

Seminaarin esitelmät avasi Varsinais-Suomen sairaanhoitopiirin johtajaylilääkäri, dosentti Samuli Saarni esitelmällä Filosofi sairaalaa johtamassa. Tämän jälkeen esitelmöivät Helena Siipi (Lajien henkiinherättäminen sukupuutto- ja lajikäsitysten näkökulmasta) ja Markku Oksanen (Tiedon valikoiminen ja aidot moraaliongelmat bioetiikassa) filosofian oppiaineesta.

Seminaarin päätti teoreettisen filosofian professorin Olli Koistisen esitelmä Medicina mentis: filosofia lääketieteenä, jonka jälkeen kuultiin vielä päivänsankarin puheenvuoro.

A New Book on Social Philosophy

Juha Räikkä’s essay collection Social Justice in Practice has been published by Springer last week. The book has twelve chapters. Some of the chapters are revised versions of previously published articles. Others are new papers, including the chapter that criticizes the so-called pragmatic turn in political philosophy. Those who support the “pragmatic turn” argue that political philosophy should have a clear practical relevance so that the redommendations of political theories would have an action-guiding character, here and now. Räikkä points out that much of what political philosophers say is really meant to guide our thoughts rather than the actions of those who make political decisions today, and that there is an excellent justification for this practice (a justification which is based on the analysis of the notion of feasibility). By having an influence on ideas and ideals people have, political philosophy may indeed have action-guiding results, but only in the long run. As Kant once said, “we shall have been long dead and buried when the fruits we helped to sow are harvested”.
