Väitös: Mika Hämäläinen – Paremmuuden käsite urheilussa

VTM Mika Hämäläinen puolusti väitöskirjaansa perjantaina 20.3. aiheenaan ”paremmuuden käsite ja urheilukilpailut” (The Concept of Betterness and Sport Competitions). Hämäläisen vastaväittäjänä toimi professori Mike McNamee Swansean yliopistosta. Kustoksena toimi professori Juha Räikkä Turun yliopistosta.

Hämäläinen analysoi väitöskirjassaan paremmuuden käsitettä urheilukilpailussa. Toisinaan katsojien mielestä paras kilpailija tai joukkue ei ole virallisten tulosten mukainen voittaja. Hämäläisen mukaan tämä on mahdollista, koska paremmuus määräytyy virallisen tuloksen lisäksi myös ideaalisesti tuomaroidun lopputuloksen ja osoitetun taidokkuuden perusteella.Yhdessä nämä kolme kriteeriä määräävät paremmuuden urheilukilpailussa.

Usean kriteerin vaikutus mahdollistaa sen, että esimerkiksi jalkapallossa joukkue, joka on osoittautunut enemmän taitoa saattaa olla hävinnyt virallisen tuloksen mukaan. Tuomarointi voi olla epäonnistunut siten, että tuomaroinnin virheiden puuttuessa olisi tulos ollut toinen.

Toisaalta joukkue tai kilpailija voi osoittaa enemmän urheilullista taidokkuutta kuin voittanut joukkue. Esimerkiksi jalkapallojoukkue voi osoittaa enemmän taidokkuutta kuin vastustaja, mutta hävitä pelin esimerkiksi tuomarivirheen takia. Näin on mahdollista että voittanut joukkue on tosiasiassa osoittanut vähemmän taidokkuutta ja olisi myös ideaalisesti tuomaroidun lopputuloksen mukaan häviäjä. Tämä kriteerien hajoaminen siten että virallinen tulos ei heijastele niitä kaikkia mahdollistaa erimielisyydet lopputuloksesta.

Turun yliopisto ja Åbo Akademi opetusyhteistyöhön filosofian alalla

Turun yliopiston ja Åbo Akademin filosofian yksiköt ovat marraskuussa solmineet sopimuksen, jossa sovitaan opetuksen korvaavuuksista. Jatkossa TY:n opiskelijat voivat vapaasti osallistua ÅA:n filosofian kursseille ja päinvastoin. Kurssien korvaavuuksista sovitaan ”kotiyliopistoissa”. Samalla sovittiin siitä, että englanninkielistä kurssitarjontaa pyritään entisestään lisäämään. Tehokas informaation kulku yksiköiden kanssa varmistetaan.

Yhteistyösopimuksella on merkittäviä synergiaetuja, sillä Turun yliopiston ja Åbo Akademin filosofian yksiköiden tutkimus- ja opetusprofiilit poikkeavat toisistaan. Opiskelijat hyötyvät sopimuksesta huomattavasti.

Sopimus on hyvin linjassa rehtoreiden aiemmin tekemän sopimuksen kanssa, jossa Turun yliopiston ja Åbo Akademin yhteistyötä vahvistetaan.

Sopimuksen yksiköiden välillä allekirjoittivat dekaanit Kimmo Rentola ja Holger Weiss. Neuvottelut opetusta koskevan sopimuksen sisällöstä käytiin hyvässä hengessä molempien filosofian yksiköiden edustajien kesken.

Philosophy Units of University of Turku and Åbo Academi sign a cooperation agreement

Turku Phil unit has signed an agreement with the phil unit of Åbo Academi that defines equivalences in the courses given in the universities. From now on the students of University of Turku can freely attend to courses in Academi and vice versa. The compensations will be arranged in the university in which the attendant is a student. The plan is also to increase the number of courses given in English. In addition communication between the units will be enhanced.

The agreement creates significant benefits in terms of synergy, for there is a marked difference in the research profiles of the units. Thus the students will profit from the agreement substantially.

The agreement is well in line with the agreement signed earlier by the rector of the universities, in which the cooperation between University of Turku and Åbo Academi is strengthened.

The agreement between the units was signed by deans Kimmo Rentola and Holger Weiss. Negotiations concerning the agreement were conducted in a friendly atmosphere among the representatives from both units.

Väitös: Daryl de Bruyn, ”Spinoza’s Concept of Emending the Intellect”

Daryl de Bruyn (MA) puolusti väitöstutkimustaan ”Spinoza’s Concept of Emending the Intellect” 18.10.2014. Vastaväittäjäksi oli kutsuttu professori Julie Klein (Villanova University), ja kustoksena toimi oppiaineen professori Olli Koistinen (Turku).

Väitöstutkimuksen eräs tavoite oli osoittaa, että Spinozan nuoruudessaan aloittama hanke ”älyn parantamisesta” jatkui kantavana teemana myös hänen myöhemmässä filosofisessa tuotannossaan.

Vastaväittäjä toivoi avauspuheenvuorossaan, että itse väitteleminen etenisi Spinozan hengessä. Että väittelijän ja vastaväittäjän yhteisenä ystävänä olisi totuus, että tilaisuuden päämääränä olisi vuoropuhelu keskustelukumppanin selättämisen sijaan, että myös erimielisyydelle löytyisi lopulta sijaa. Pitkään kestänyt väitöstilaisuus saavutti nämä päämäärät erinomaisesti, mutta tästä lämminhenkisyyden ideaalista huolimatta vastaväittäjä ei päästänyt väittelijää helpolla.

Erityisesti erimielisyyden aiheeksi nousi väitöstutkimuksen sivuama käsitys synnynnäisistä ideoista: vastaväittäjä ei täysin hyväksynyt de Bruynin Spinozalle lukemaa karteesiolaista käsitystä synnynnäisistä ideoista. Lopulta päädyttiin toteamaan – professori Kleinin alkupuheenvuorossaan ehdottamaa ideaalia kunnioitten – että vaikka evidenssi tälle tulkinnalle saattaa olla vähäistä, ei sen vastainen todistusaineisto myöskään ole vakuuttavaa.

Dissertation: Daryl de Bruyn, ”Spinoza’s Concept of Emending the Intellect”

Daryl de Bruyn (MA) defended his thesis ”Spinoza’s Concept of Emending the Intellect” 18.10.2014. Invited to act as the opponent was professor Julie Klein from Villanova University. As the esteemed custodian functioned professor Olli Koistinen from the phil unit.

One of the claims of the dissertation was that the task Spinoza embarked upon in his youth about “emending the intellect” was a theme that continued to play significant a role through out his later works.

In her opening address, the opponent wished to proceed with the event in the spirit of Spinoza: that opponent and proponent would be united by a mutual friend, the truth; that the goal of the defense would be dialogue instead of one’s defeating another; that in the end there would be room from disagreement also. Rather long defense achieved these goals in the end rather well; though despite of the cordial maxim proposed in the opening address, the opponent didn’t let the proponent of the hook easily.

A crucial point of disagreement was found the concept of innate ideas that was only touched upon the dissertation. The opponent couldn’t quite come to accept the rather Cartesian conception of innateness de Bruyn attributed to Spinoza. In the end it was agreed – in the spirit of the ideal professor Klein proposed to follow – that while the evidence in favor of the conception proposed by the proponent might be insufficient, the evidence to the contrary is hardly compelling either.

The Annual Congress for Doctoral Students of the Finnish Doctoral Programme of Philosophy

The beginning of October has traditionally been the time when doctoral candidates from the Finnish universities gather together in Tampere to share their ideas on philosophical problems. The congress has been a great place to learn what other doctoral candidates study as well as who these peers are. A chance of networking and building collegiality are among the benefits to which the participants have access.

The program

This year the topics covered a wide range of philosophy: from contemporary questions in philosophy of science concerning the value of peer review to the discussion of the ontological status of fictional characters; from the problem of the limits of the mind to epistemological issues in historical research. Susanne Uusitalo and Kreeta Ranki represented the University of Turku in Tampere. Susanne discussed addicts’ preferences and Kreeta talked about animals in Kant’s philosophy of mind. Each speaker was ascribed an experienced commentator to ensure that everyone gained useful feedback.

Valtakunnallisen filosofian tohtoriohjelman järjestämä vuosittainen tohtoriopiskelijoiden kongressi antaa mahdollisuuden tutustua vertaistensa tekemään tutkimukseen. Tänä vuonna kolmipäiväisessä kongressissa kuultiin esitelmiä esimerkiksi vertaisarvioinnin ongelmista, fiktionaalisten henkilöhahmojen ontologisesta asemasta, mielen rajoista ja historian tutkimuksen epistemologisista erityispiirteistä. Turun yliopiston filosofian laitokselta mukana olivat Susanne Uusitalo ja Kreeta Ranki.

Turun filosofia menestyi jälleen kansainvälisessä yliopistovertailussa

Turun filosofian oppiaine on jälleen sijoittunut 150 parhaan joukkoon maailman laajuisessa QS World University Ranking yliopistovertailussa.

Turun yliopiston sisäisessä vertailussa oppiaine sijoittuu – kuten aiempina vuosinakin – ykkössijalle psykologian oppiaineen kanssa. Seuraavat sijoittujat (sijoilla 151–200) ovat historia ja arkeologia, oikeustiede sekä lääketiede (joista kaksi viimeksi mainittua ovat, muuten, tiedekuntia).

Kansallisesti Turun filosofian edellä on ainoastaan Helsingin yliopiston filosofia (sijoitus 51–100). Tampereen ja Jyväskylä filosofia sijoittuvat sijoille 151–200.

Kansainvälisesti Turun filosofia sijoittuu samaan luokkaan kuin esimerkiksi Tukholman, Dublinin Trinity Collegen ja University of Texas at Austinin filosofian laitokset. Vertailun vuoksi mainittakoon, että viimeksi mainitussa kansainvälisesti korkean profiilin laitoksessa on noin neljäkymmentä professoria, kun taas Turussa on tällä hetkellä kolmea vakituista ja yksi vieraileva professori.

Turku Philosophy well ranked in QS Rankings

Turku phil unit was ranked in the group of 150 best philosophy units in QS World University Rankings.

In University of Turku, subject of philosophy ranks the highest (with psychology), as has been the case in recent years. The subsequent subjects (on places 151–200) are History and archeology, Law and Legal studies, and Medicine (the last two of which are, by the way, faculties in the University).

Nationally only Philosophy in University of Helsinki outranks Turku (51–100). Universities of Tampere and Jyväskylä are ranked on places 151–200.

Internationally Turku phil unit is ranked along with such philosophy departments as University of Stockholm, Dublin Trinity College and University of Texas at Austin. While we are making comparisons, it seem fair to mention that for example in the internationally esteemed, high profile philosophy unit of Austin there are nearly forty professors, whereas Turku phil unit has only three plus one visiting professor.

Filosofiaan ennätysmäärä uusia opiskelijoita

Filosofiaan on tänä syksynä otettu ennätysmäärä uusia opiskelijoita. Filosofian opiskelemisen Turussa pääaineenaan aloitti nyt yhteensä 19 henkilöä.

Opetus- ja kulttuuriministeriön päätöksen johdosta filosofia sai myös kolme lisäaloituspaikkaa. Aloituspaikkojen lisääminen liittyy valtion pyrkimykseen pidentää nuorten työuria nopeuttamalla korkeakouluopiskelun aloittamista.

Lisäpaikkoja on myönnetty aloille, ”joilla on hyvät työllistymisnäkymät ja suoranaista työvoimapulaa” (ks. yliopiston uutinen aiheesta).

Filosofian henkilökunta toivottaa uudet opiskelijat lämpimästi tervetulleeksi!

Turku phil-unit makes a personal best in student intake

Phil-unit has accepted a record-breaking number of new students. There are 19 new students starting their studies this fall in Turku.

On the basis of Ministry of Education and Culture decision, philosophy was allotted thee extra positions in the intake. The decision is related to the aim of the Finnish government to make careers, especially of the young, longer.

The extra places were apportioned to units on the basis of the general employment situation.

The faculty members of the phil-unit warmly welcomes the new students!

A TUCEMEMS Conference on Early Modern Philosophy: Understanding the World and Human Beings

TUCEMEMS (Turku Center for Medieval and Early Modern Studies) järjesti professori Olli Koistisen johdolla korkean tason kansainvälisen seminaarin Turussa touko-kesäkuun vaihteessa. Kaksi päiväinen seminaari A TUCEMEMS Conference on Early Modern Philosophy: Understanding the World and Human Beings piti sisällään suuren kattauksen esitelmiä Augustinuksesta ja Immanuel Kantiin.

Lauantaina esitelmöivät Sebastian Gardner (University College, Lontoo), Peter Myrdal (Uppsala), Kai Hauser (Technische Universität Berlin), Hemmo Laiho (Turku), Tomas Ekenberg (Uppsala) ja Justin Steinberg (Brooklyn College).

Sunnuntaina lauteille nousivat puolestaan Valtteri Viljanen (Turku), John Carriero (UCLA/dosentti@UTU), Arto Repo (Turku), Lilli Alanen (Uppsala), Olli Koistinen (Turku) sekä Joseph Almog ja Jani Sinokki (Turku).

TUCEMEMS (Turku Center for Medieval and Early Modern Studies) organized a high level international conference at the phil unit last week end, professor Olli Koistinen being the leading organizer. Two day seminar titled A TUCEMEMS Conference on Early Modern Philosophy: Understanding the World and Human Beings included a large variety of presentations on topics rangin from Augustine to Immanuel Kant.

Saturday’s speakers were Sebastian Gardner (University College, London), Peter Myrdal (Uppsala), Kai Hauser (Technische Universität Berlin), Hemmo Laiho (Turku), Tomas Ekenberg (Uppsala) and Justin Steinberg (Brooklyn College).

On sunday presentations were delivered by Valtteri Viljanen (Turku), John Carriero (UCLA/docent@UTU), Arto Repo (Turku), Lilli Alanen (Uppsala), Olli Koistinen (Turku) and Joseph Almog with Jani Sinokki (Turku).

Professori John Carriero vierailee oppiaineessa

Professori John Carriero (UCLA, Turun yliopiston dosentti) vierailee filosofian oppiaineessa toukokuussa. Hän pitää vierailunsa aikana 26. – 30.5 kurssin otsikolla  “Themes from Spinoza’s Ethics”.

Opetus järjestetään seminaarihuoneessa 150 seuraavalla aikataululla: ma 26.5. 12-14, ti 27.5. 10-12 ja 16-18, ke 28.5. 14-16, ja pe 30.5. 14-16.

Professor John Carriero (UCLA, title of docent at UTU) is visiting Turku phil unit at the end of May. During his visit professor Carriero will be teaching a one-week course “Themes from Spinoza’s Ethics”.

Lectures will be given at the Seminar Room 150, with the following schedule: Mo 26.5. 12-14, Tue 27.5. 10-12 and 16-18, Wed 28.5. 14-16, and Fri 30.5. 14-16.
