Väitös: Mika Hämäläinen – Paremmuuden käsite urheilussa

VTM Mika Hämäläinen puolusti väitöskirjaansa perjantaina 20.3. aiheenaan ”paremmuuden käsite ja urheilukilpailut” (The Concept of Betterness and Sport Competitions). Hämäläisen vastaväittäjänä toimi professori Mike McNamee Swansean yliopistosta. Kustoksena toimi professori Juha Räikkä Turun yliopistosta.

Hämäläinen analysoi väitöskirjassaan paremmuuden käsitettä urheilukilpailussa. Toisinaan katsojien mielestä paras kilpailija tai joukkue ei ole virallisten tulosten mukainen voittaja. Hämäläisen mukaan tämä on mahdollista, koska paremmuus määräytyy virallisen tuloksen lisäksi myös ideaalisesti tuomaroidun lopputuloksen ja osoitetun taidokkuuden perusteella.Yhdessä nämä kolme kriteeriä määräävät paremmuuden urheilukilpailussa.

Usean kriteerin vaikutus mahdollistaa sen, että esimerkiksi jalkapallossa joukkue, joka on osoittautunut enemmän taitoa saattaa olla hävinnyt virallisen tuloksen mukaan. Tuomarointi voi olla epäonnistunut siten, että tuomaroinnin virheiden puuttuessa olisi tulos ollut toinen.

Toisaalta joukkue tai kilpailija voi osoittaa enemmän urheilullista taidokkuutta kuin voittanut joukkue. Esimerkiksi jalkapallojoukkue voi osoittaa enemmän taidokkuutta kuin vastustaja, mutta hävitä pelin esimerkiksi tuomarivirheen takia. Näin on mahdollista että voittanut joukkue on tosiasiassa osoittanut vähemmän taidokkuutta ja olisi myös ideaalisesti tuomaroidun lopputuloksen mukaan häviäjä. Tämä kriteerien hajoaminen siten että virallinen tulos ei heijastele niitä kaikkia mahdollistaa erimielisyydet lopputuloksesta.

Turun yliopisto ja Åbo Akademi opetusyhteistyöhön filosofian alalla

Turun yliopiston ja Åbo Akademin filosofian yksiköt ovat marraskuussa solmineet sopimuksen, jossa sovitaan opetuksen korvaavuuksista. Jatkossa TY:n opiskelijat voivat vapaasti osallistua ÅA:n filosofian kursseille ja päinvastoin. Kurssien korvaavuuksista sovitaan ”kotiyliopistoissa”. Samalla sovittiin siitä, että englanninkielistä kurssitarjontaa pyritään entisestään lisäämään. Tehokas informaation kulku yksiköiden kanssa varmistetaan.

Yhteistyösopimuksella on merkittäviä synergiaetuja, sillä Turun yliopiston ja Åbo Akademin filosofian yksiköiden tutkimus- ja opetusprofiilit poikkeavat toisistaan. Opiskelijat hyötyvät sopimuksesta huomattavasti.

Sopimus on hyvin linjassa rehtoreiden aiemmin tekemän sopimuksen kanssa, jossa Turun yliopiston ja Åbo Akademin yhteistyötä vahvistetaan.

Sopimuksen yksiköiden välillä allekirjoittivat dekaanit Kimmo Rentola ja Holger Weiss. Neuvottelut opetusta koskevan sopimuksen sisällöstä käytiin hyvässä hengessä molempien filosofian yksiköiden edustajien kesken.

Philosophy Units of University of Turku and Åbo Academi sign a cooperation agreement

Turku Phil unit has signed an agreement with the phil unit of Åbo Academi that defines equivalences in the courses given in the universities. From now on the students of University of Turku can freely attend to courses in Academi and vice versa. The compensations will be arranged in the university in which the attendant is a student. The plan is also to increase the number of courses given in English. In addition communication between the units will be enhanced.

The agreement creates significant benefits in terms of synergy, for there is a marked difference in the research profiles of the units. Thus the students will profit from the agreement substantially.

The agreement is well in line with the agreement signed earlier by the rector of the universities, in which the cooperation between University of Turku and Åbo Academi is strengthened.

The agreement between the units was signed by deans Kimmo Rentola and Holger Weiss. Negotiations concerning the agreement were conducted in a friendly atmosphere among the representatives from both units.

Väitös: Daryl de Bruyn, ”Spinoza’s Concept of Emending the Intellect”

Daryl de Bruyn (MA) puolusti väitöstutkimustaan ”Spinoza’s Concept of Emending the Intellect” 18.10.2014. Vastaväittäjäksi oli kutsuttu professori Julie Klein (Villanova University), ja kustoksena toimi oppiaineen professori Olli Koistinen (Turku).

Väitöstutkimuksen eräs tavoite oli osoittaa, että Spinozan nuoruudessaan aloittama hanke ”älyn parantamisesta” jatkui kantavana teemana myös hänen myöhemmässä filosofisessa tuotannossaan.

Vastaväittäjä toivoi avauspuheenvuorossaan, että itse väitteleminen etenisi Spinozan hengessä. Että väittelijän ja vastaväittäjän yhteisenä ystävänä olisi totuus, että tilaisuuden päämääränä olisi vuoropuhelu keskustelukumppanin selättämisen sijaan, että myös erimielisyydelle löytyisi lopulta sijaa. Pitkään kestänyt väitöstilaisuus saavutti nämä päämäärät erinomaisesti, mutta tästä lämminhenkisyyden ideaalista huolimatta vastaväittäjä ei päästänyt väittelijää helpolla.

Erityisesti erimielisyyden aiheeksi nousi väitöstutkimuksen sivuama käsitys synnynnäisistä ideoista: vastaväittäjä ei täysin hyväksynyt de Bruynin Spinozalle lukemaa karteesiolaista käsitystä synnynnäisistä ideoista. Lopulta päädyttiin toteamaan – professori Kleinin alkupuheenvuorossaan ehdottamaa ideaalia kunnioitten – että vaikka evidenssi tälle tulkinnalle saattaa olla vähäistä, ei sen vastainen todistusaineisto myöskään ole vakuuttavaa.

Dissertation: Daryl de Bruyn, ”Spinoza’s Concept of Emending the Intellect”

Daryl de Bruyn (MA) defended his thesis ”Spinoza’s Concept of Emending the Intellect” 18.10.2014. Invited to act as the opponent was professor Julie Klein from Villanova University. As the esteemed custodian functioned professor Olli Koistinen from the phil unit.

One of the claims of the dissertation was that the task Spinoza embarked upon in his youth about “emending the intellect” was a theme that continued to play significant a role through out his later works.

In her opening address, the opponent wished to proceed with the event in the spirit of Spinoza: that opponent and proponent would be united by a mutual friend, the truth; that the goal of the defense would be dialogue instead of one’s defeating another; that in the end there would be room from disagreement also. Rather long defense achieved these goals in the end rather well; though despite of the cordial maxim proposed in the opening address, the opponent didn’t let the proponent of the hook easily.

A crucial point of disagreement was found the concept of innate ideas that was only touched upon the dissertation. The opponent couldn’t quite come to accept the rather Cartesian conception of innateness de Bruyn attributed to Spinoza. In the end it was agreed – in the spirit of the ideal professor Klein proposed to follow – that while the evidence in favor of the conception proposed by the proponent might be insufficient, the evidence to the contrary is hardly compelling either.

Vierailu bioetiikan tutkimuskeskuksessa Serbiassa

Filosofian tohtorikoulutettava Rosa Rantanen vieraili kuluneena kesänä Center for the Study of Bioethics -keskuksessa Belgradissa, Serbiassa. Vierailun isäntänä toimi keskuksen johtaja professori Vojin Rakić, joka on myös Serbian UNESCO Chair in Bioethics -yksikön johtaja. Vierailun aikana Rantanen tutustui tutkimustyön ohella keskuksen toimintaan sekä mm. osallistui puhujana Belgradissa järjestettyyn Bioethics of Life and Death -seminaariin. Bioetiikan keskus pyrkii yhdessä UNESCO Chair in Bioethics -yksikön ja muiden yhteistyökumppaneiden kanssa vakiinnuttamaan bioetiikan asemaa Serbiassa sekä lisäämään kansainvälistä yhteistyötä.

Visiting The Center for the Study of Bioethics in Serbia

During the summer 2014, Doctoral Candidate Rosa Rantanen visited The Center for the Study of Bioethics in Belgrade, Serbia. The visit was hosted by the leader of the center, Prof. Vojin Rakić, who is also the leader of the UNESCO Chair in Bioethics Serbian Unit. Besides research activities, the center aims to raise public awareness of bioethics in Serbia together with the UNESCO Unit.

A New Book on Social Philosophy

Juha Räikkä’s essay collection Social Justice in Practice has been published by Springer last week. The book has twelve chapters. Some of the chapters are revised versions of previously published articles. Others are new papers, including the chapter that criticizes the so-called pragmatic turn in political philosophy. Those who support the “pragmatic turn” argue that political philosophy should have a clear practical relevance so that the redommendations of political theories would have an action-guiding character, here and now. Räikkä points out that much of what political philosophers say is really meant to guide our thoughts rather than the actions of those who make political decisions today, and that there is an excellent justification for this practice (a justification which is based on the analysis of the notion of feasibility). By having an influence on ideas and ideals people have, political philosophy may indeed have action-guiding results, but only in the long run. As Kant once said, “we shall have been long dead and buried when the fruits we helped to sow are harvested”.

European Universities on Professionalization on Humanitarian Action (EUPRHA)

The University of Turku, through the Department of Behavioural Sciences and Philosophy, has been actively involved in the European Initiative “European Universities on Professionalization on Humanitarian Action” (EUPRHA). In Turku, the project has been managed and coordinated by Prof. Juha Räikkä. Daniel Weyermann has been active as a researcher.

The aim of the EUPRHA project is to contribute to the professionalization of the humanitarian sector by means of the promotion of a competence-based education of the humanitarian workforce. Actively involved are 30 European universities, Network on humanitarian Action (NOHA) Alumni, and two humanitarian associations (The Sphere Project, The International Council of Voluntary Associations).

The project has been working on the following issues during the last few years:

  • Work Group Mapping: The result will be a database with actors and educators in the humanitarian sector covering all European countries.
  • Work Group Qualifications Framework: The result will be a European Qualifications Framework for the humanitarian sector. (See http://www.euprha.org/needs-expectations/)
  • Work Group Trends: The result will be an analysis of trends in the humanitarian sector as well as of skills for new and old jobs therein.

The University of Turku has been participating in the work groups mapping, and in the dissemination of the project and its findings in Finland. For the case of Finland, it was found that there are several central actors in the humanitarian sector in Finland (such as Finn Church Aid), as well as a range of actors that also, and often more explicitly, focus on development issues. Finland lacks explicit and professional education in the field of humanitarian action, be it on university or vocational education level. Courses in development studies at universities or through the Finnish University Partnership for International Development (UniPID) seem relevantly related, but often do not explicitly focus on humanitarian action issues.

The results of the project will be presented in summer 2014, at the final EUPRHA conference that will be held in Brussels. The project will also be officially closed with this conference. There are, however, plans to uphold the cooperation amongst the 30 involved universities and to further pursue – be it formally or informally – the professionalization of humanitarian action in European countries.

Terveisiä Jyväskylästä / Greetings from Jyväskylä

Suomen akatemian rahoittama projekti Consciousness and the Conscious Subject in Early Modern Philosophy ja sen vetäjä Vili Lähteenmäki järjestivät 30–31.1.2014 seminaarin ”Metaphysics and the Mind – Early Modern Views” Jyväskylän yliopistolla.

Oppiainettamme seminaarissa edusti allekirjoittanut esitelmällä ”Descartes on Ideas”. Turun ja Jyväskylän lisäksi esitelmiä kuultiin Helsingin ja Uppsalan yliopistojen sekä Berliinin Humboldt-yliopiston edustajilta.

Kaksipäiväisen seminaarin aikana kuultiin esitelmiä keskittyen uuden ajan alun mielen metafysiikkaan. Esitysten aiheet vaihtelivat ideoiden roolista substanssikäsityksiin, ja uuden ajan alun filosofeista käsiteltiin rationalisteja Descartesia, Leibnizia ja Spinozaa sekä empiristeistä Berkeleytä, Humea ja Condillac’ta.

Consciousness and the Conscious Subject in Early Modern Philosophy, an Academy of Finland postdoctoral project of Vili Lähteenmäki, organized a workshop “Metaphysics and the Mind – Early Modern Views” in University of Jyväskylä January 30th–31st 2014.

Turku Phil Department was represented by yours truly (with a paper “Descartes on Ideas”). In addition to Jyväskylä and Turku, papers were invited from Universities of Helsinki and Uppsala, and Hulboldt University of Berlin.
