Gates are an essential element in the townscape of Old Rauma. The town was enclosed by a toll fence nearly 200 years. Strict borders forced the residents to utilize the plots carefully, and they were densily built. Gates and fences separated the public street space and private court yards. They also kept the cattle on the street side while they were taken to and from the pastures outside the toll fence. The gates were always closed at night; only the watchmen patrolled the street securing the sleeping town from fire and intruders. Even today the gates give their silent message to wanderers; open gate invites to pop in, closed gate is a sign of privacy.
Portit ovat olennainen osa Vanhan Rauman kaupunkikuvaa muistuttaen meitä entisaikojen kaupunkielämästä.
Rauma oli lähes 200 vuotta tulliaidan ympäröimä ja tunnusomaiseksi piirteeksi tiiviisti rakennetussa kaupungissa muodostui tonttien tiukka rajautuminen. Aidat ja portit erottivat julkisen kadun yksityisestä pihasta. Suljetut portit myös estivät kaupungin läpi laitumelle kulkevien kotieläinten pääsyn pihoille ja ryytimaille. Yöksi kaupunki sulkeutui; portit ja nykyään harvinaiset ikkunaluukut vedettiin kiinni. Kaduilla liikkuivat vain palovartijat ja asiattomat kulkijat. Porttien arkkitehtuurissa on mukailtu rakennusten tyylipiirteitä, ovathan ne osa julkisivua. Nykyäänkin portti viestii asennollaan kadulla kulkijalle; avoin portti kutsuu kurkistamaan pihan puolelle, suljettu portti kehottaa pysymään kadun puolella.
Wooden gates rotten fast; the oldest gates have roofs to cover them from rain and snow. In the 70´s most of the wooden gates were disappeared because they were no longer needed to separate the street and the court yard. The townscape had also lost one of it´s characteristic features. Since 1977 more 100 gates have been restored. In this tour some of the residents open their gates with stories and photographs.
Puiset portit ovat melko lyhytikäisiä. Kattamattomat portit hienoine koristeleikkauksineen ovat alttiita kosteusvaurioille, ja kaupungin vanhimmat portit ovatkin katettuja, kuten Naulan talon portti. 1970-luvulle tultaessa monet portit olivat kadonneet koska niitä ei enää tarvittu katutilan ja pihan rajaamiseen. Samalla kaupunkikuva oli muuttunut suuresti. Vuoden 1977 jälkeen Vanhaan Raumaan on palautettu yli sata porttia. Tällä kierroksella muutamat Vanhan Rauman asukkaat raottavat porttiaan kertomuksin ja valokuvin.
